There may be some confusion of terms here. When we get down to our true core of being, the ego disappears, and with it, so goes the concept of self. Thus, any self, authentic or otherwise, is an artificial construction. No construction can define our core being. Instead, the idea of self --even an authentic self-- becomes a barrier between us and our most profound potential. That is why I object when I see people using the idea of being true to their authentic selves as an excuse for not reaching deeper into what they are and can be.

Thank you for your responses. They have given me something to contemplate and made it apparent that I may need to be more careful about defying my terms in the future.
